The Patient Handling Injuries Review of Systems (PHIRES) toolkit
injuries September 22nd. 2022, 1:55pmIn response to the high rate of manual handling injuries in healthcare, WorkSafe, together with Monash University, the University of the Sunshine Coast, and Victorian Hospitals co-designed the Patient Handling Injuries Review of Systems (PHIRES) toolkit.
Based on a systems thinking approach, the toolkit provides a standardised process for reviewing and revising risk controls following the report of a staff injury involving patient handling.
The toolkit helps OHS professionals consult with staff and key stakeholders to:
1) understand why the current risk controls aren’t working and gather suggestions for improvement,
2) identify overarching issues driving injuries,
3) develop feasible and practicable actions to prevent patient handling injuries.
This video provides a review of the systems tool kit and the findings from implementing and evaluating the tool within Victorian hospitals.
