How to prevent knee pain in kids and youth? – Dr. Shweta Arora

How to prevent knee pain in kids and youth? - Dr. Shweta Arora

"Now a days we see kids with lot of weakness in the hip muscles which is giving lot of pressure at the knee joints because the supporting muscles, hip knee, ankle can’t bear the weight.nSo the key to reduce knee pain in the young age is to strengthen the muscle and coming to weight part if you gain 1 kg of weight three times pressure on the knee increases. So if the kid is just sitting and gaining his weight then it is also an important factor of knee pain.nSecondly there are two types of knee problems people are facing. One is called as chondromalacia patella it is mainly happen on young age and the cartilage between patella and femur, when it is gets degenerated then the people get knee pain. The very best way to manage this knee pain is strengthening the muscle. Having supplements at such a young age are not advice able but calcium and vitamins are helpful to strength muscle and bones.nSecond thing the people are suffering is arthritis problem. When the joint space between femur and tibia reduces. To manage that you can have the supplements to build up the cartilage.nIf it is in early stage you can start strengthening the muscle and do some exercises regularly. Second thing which will help you to reduce over knee problems is you should modify your life style like if you have a habit of standing long in the kitchen you should modify it which means you may do so many works sitting position only. If it is old age arthritis knee means then you should not bend your knee more and avoid sitting like cross position because the compression forces are become perpendicular. nTypically, pain, aching, stiffness and swelling in and around one or more joints characterize rheumatic conditions. The symptoms can develop gradually or suddenly. Certain rheumatic conditions can also involve the immune system and various internal organs of the body. Arthritis is more common among adults aged 65 years or older, but people of all ages (including children) can be affected. If you are sitting straight with some pillow under the knee so that it will not create any compression forces because the forces are parallel in that position. But if it is young age then sit as your comfort.n"

INSTANT RELIEF! Sacroiliac Joint (SI Joint) Self Adjustment Technique

joints No Comments »

How to realign your pelvis at home and on your own in 5 simple steps! Adjust and mobilize your own SI joint with help from a doctor of physical therapy. Great relief for lower back pain caused by sacroiliac joint dysfunction. Keep reading for more!

REAL-TIME FOLLOW-ALONG ADJUSTMENT STARTS AT 7:36

WHAT IS YOUR SI JOINT?
Your pelvic ring is composed of three bones – you have 2 iliums (the bones on the sides) and one sacrum (the bone in the back). Where these bones come together is known as the sacroiliac, or “SI”, joint. You have one on the left and one on the right.

WHAT IS SI JOINT PAIN?
Normally this pelvic ring should be a very firm and stable structure. There are some instances where movement can occur at the SI joint which result in significant pain in this area. Some of the more common conditions I see where the SI joint is a main cause of pain include pregnancy (especially postpartum), car accidents, and slip-and-fall injuries. A history of SI joint pain or “joint laxity” can be another pre-disposing factor to pain in this area.

HOW TO TREAT SI JOINT PAIN
If you’re experiencing pain in this area, the first step is to “put it back in place”. The reason why it’s hurting is because the bones aren’t lining up like they should and it may be “stuck” in this unhealthy position. We first need to get the bones into a “neutral” and “normal” position for you, and then work to strengthen and stabilize the bones in that position.

This video will teach you how to adjust your sacroiliac joint on your own in order to put your hips back in proper alignment.

HOW TO ADJUST YOUR SI JOINT ON YOUR OWN
The best way to mobilize your SI joint on your own is via a “muscle energy technique”. Basically we’re going to fire all the muscles that cross your SI joint to pull your bones back into place. This is a highly effective method and usually offers immediate relief.

Please consult the video for the entire SI joint mobilization technique. The steps are outlined for you below as follows:

PUSH/PULL (LEFT LEG ON TOP): hold 5 seconds, repeat 3 times

PUSH/PULL (RIGHT LEG ON TOP): hold 5 seconds, repeat 3 times

BALL SQUEEZE: hold 5 seconds, repeat 3 times

BELT PULL-APART: hold 5 seconds, repeat 3 times

BRIDGE: hold 5 seconds, repeat 3 times

This is a highly effective method for mobilizing your own SI joint and putting it back into place. If you truly are experiencing SI joint pain, performing this mobilization 1-2 times daily (or when painful) can be an effective means of “putting it back into place”.

Did you try it out? How does it feel? Be sure to leave me a comment below to let me know your experience!

Did you get some relief from this self-mobilization technique? Be sure to leave the video a THUMBS UP to like it!

The Patient Handling Injuries Review of Systems (PHIRES) toolkit

injuries No Comments »

In response to the high rate of manual handling injuries in healthcare, WorkSafe, together with Monash University, the University of the Sunshine Coast, and Victorian Hospitals co-designed the Patient Handling Injuries Review of Systems (PHIRES) toolkit.

Based on a systems thinking approach, the toolkit provides a standardised process for reviewing and revising risk controls following the report of a staff injury involving patient handling.

The toolkit helps OHS professionals consult with staff and key stakeholders to:

1) understand why the current risk controls aren’t working and gather suggestions for improvement,

2) identify overarching issues driving injuries,

3) develop feasible and practicable actions to prevent patient handling injuries.

This video provides a review of the systems tool kit and the findings from implementing and evaluating the tool within Victorian hospitals.
